job search networkingCareer networking is important for your job search, and in-person networking allows you to build strong relationships. By attending in-person networking meetings, you can get assistance with your job search, hear about local job opportunities, and make contacts at companies you are targeting. Search for career and job search networking groups in your area. Attend meetings for job seekers, and if you’re in a professional association attend those meetings or mixers.

There are numerous networking groups in the Washington, DC Metro area that will help you learn, connect, and grow your network of supporters for your job search. Here are three in the Washington, DC Metro area that we’ve found to be welcoming and helpful in navigating the career transition:

NOVA MOAA Chapter – Business and Networking Group (BANG)
— Held on the last Wednesday of each month in Falls Church, Virginia

The MOAA Northern Virginia Chapter holds its monthly Business and Networking Group meeting the last Wednesday of each month from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the historic Clark House (6332 Barcroft Mews Drive, Falls Church, VA).  Due to Holidays, the NOVA MOAA BANG does not meet in November and December.

All meetings are free and everyone is invited to attend and bring a friend. Each meeting features a Spotlight Speaker who provides job search, business development or personal networking skills information. The Career Network Ministry (CNM)
— Held on Tuesday nights in Vienna, Virginia

The Career Network Ministry is one of the outreach teams of McLean Bible Church in Vienna, Virginia. Their goal is to provide caring support to individuals during career transitions and to support you in finding a job. The Career Network Ministry provides ministry and support to anyone in a work life transition. Their meetings are open to all.

They provide consultation and training for skill development, job search development to include resume development, job search techniques, networking and interviewing techniques. Registration and orientations for first time visitors begin around 6 pm. A typical meeting plan includes 6:30 pm – One-on-one support from experienced volunteers and breakout sessions; 8:00 pm – General meeting with main speaker or workshop facilitator; Networking time following the meeting.
